Recommended: Best Web Host, Dreamhost

DreamhostI often get asked about what web host I use and if it’s the best web host I’ve found. I often reply, “if it wasn’t the best web host I’ve found, I wouldn’t be using them, dumbass”. These days, with domain registrations dirt cheap (cheap as free in some cases) and hosting features out of control (can you say “terabytes”? knew ya could), it’s easy to make a switch from one to another relatively cheaply. Companies need to make sure they’re services stay in top-notch form to keep customers from switching to another host.

I went through about half a dozen web hosts before I found Dreamhost - in my opinion, the best web host around.

  • Reasonably priced - you’re not going to pay a hundred bucks a month, but neither will you pay pennies a month. The “pennies per month” hosts… well, you get what you pay for. I’ve tried them. They’ve all sucked.
  • Full featured - you’re not going to get the Fantastico installation with it’s dozens of programs that you’ll never use. Instead, you’ll get one-click installs of the best of the best: Wordpress, Joomla, Gallery, and others.
  • Uptime - seems like every web host says they’ve got a guaranteed 99.9% uptime. Dreamhost actually does. I’ve been with Dreamhost for 1.25 years - since January of 2006. In all that time, I’ve had my site go down for a total of 8 hours. That’s 99.92699% uptime.
  • Storage and bandwidth allotments increase weekly. Dreamhost adds a full gigabyte of storage weekly and a full sixteen gigabytes of bandwidth weekly. Right now I’ve got 239 GB of storage and 2792 GB of bandwidth - that’s 2.72 terabytes, folks - and it’s rising.
  • They’ve gone green.
  • They’re employee owned.

Right, so, the best web host? Dreamhost by a wide margin - in my experience. I certainly haven’t tried them all, and there are a few bloggers whose opinions I highly respect who recommend other services. That works for them… for my money and sanity, the best web host is Dreamhost.
