Dreamhost Goes Green

Dreamhost Goes Green iconThe popular web hosting company, Dreamhost, announced recently that they’ve "gone green" by becoming carbon-neutral. Although the bulk of the movement was achieved through the purchase of "offsets", the company is making efforts by changing practices within the offices as well. Here is a short excerpt from the announcement:

Putting a price on carbon output is just one way to help make the world a better place. It’s a first step towards true energy sustainability. Organizations large and small are constantly working on reducing their environmental emissions to meet government-imposed (and self-imposed) emissions caps. When they do so a neutral third party then steps in to verify the reduction and issues what are known as “emission reduction credits”.

Yet another reason I’m proud to be a Dreamhost customer.

The emission reduction (offset) credits are not without controversy, much like the climate crisis itself.

There’s always more money to be made…

If you’re interested, I highly recommend looking into the facts. If you’re not interested, if you’re one of those people who would rather balance the risk of a worldwide flood against a few bucks from your wallet, feel free to keep your fucking useless, greedy head in the sand where it’s been.

To put it another way: if the thousands of scientists who support the evidence of carbon emissions are right and we do nothing about it, New York City ends up underwater. Fuck the terrorists, that kind of thing will have a far larger impact than any terror attack. Or, if the scientists are wrong, and we make efforts to reduce carbon emissions anyway, we’ll have spent some money and gotten a cleaner environment in return.

There’s always more money to be made… and one of these days the greedy fucks that don’t want to part with their precious jack will come to realize that there’s a shitload of money to be made in the "save the earth" industry.

When China has stronger regulations for automobile emissions than the United States, something really wrong is going on.

What about having your web site powered by solar….AISO (http://www.aiso.net) is 100% solar powered, both their servers and data center are powered by onsite solar panels. And they also have a partnership with Co-Op America, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Green Building Council. Plus, they are doing more then just making sure their electricity is green. Their data center and office is green too by using environmentally friendly air conditioners, solar tubes to bring in natural light, a propane powered generator instead of diesel, VMWare virtualization to reduce their server electricity usage, 6 watt energy saving desktop computers for their employees, and soon to be LEED certified as a green data center, the only public one in North America, at least that I have found so far.

Great comment, Lupe, thanks. While I’m definitely happy with Dreamhost, I’m the first to admit that as long as there’s competition, there will be better products popping up. Whenever my Dreamhost account comes up for renewal, I do a check to see what the competition is up to - and I’ll be looking at AISO when that happens next. I can’t say that ‘green-ness’ is the number one factor for me, but it’s a factor.
